TRENDS SCHMENDS. AMIRITE? I once went to a Li Edelkoort talk and she said “if you think you’ve bought something on trend, that trend has already died”. The truth is, by the time most of the fashion week trends hit mainstream stores, they’ve crested the peak of trendiness. I suppose the real question is, who cares? I have always, (ALWAYS) believed that the only trends worth following are the ones that work for you, your body and your lifestyle. While I absolutely love fashion, I’m really quite on the fence about trendspotting and trend following. Having said that, there are a few key trends that have emerged at the various fashion weeks that excite me massively. Let’s dive in.
Winter is coming. And Nikki and I have been furiously and fiercely pinning and preparing for our autumn capsule wardrobe posts. Shopping and shooting whenever we get a chance. But looking at the pins I absolutely LOVED vs what I actually wear, left a few inconsistencies that made me wonder what my personal style actually is. Then Nikki in her brilliance gave me the answer. We’ve spoken about personal uniforms for a while – this is your tried-and-tested, true-to-you fashion. You usually need to sit still and examine your wardrobe to see what you wear on a daily basis. But in a nutshell, it is your signature look. Fashion that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident and more like ‘you’. Fashion you gravitate towards time after time. Nikki is a bottoms and top person while I tend to steer towards dresses. But I’ve wanted to switch things up for a while.
“Self-care” trended massively in 2018 and we couldn’t be happier about it. In fact, watching all these amazing women embrace putting themselves first got us so excited that we decided we needed to do the same. By now you know that for both Kim and I, this blog has been one of our greatest acts of self-care. We realised that we needed a place to flourish as women and grow our interests and our friendship beyond our status as mothers. While we will continue to serve you with amazing fashion and lifestyle content, we wanted to find a way to encourage you to do the same. To live out loud, to claim moments for yourself, to treat yourself well… How could we do this in a way that would be fun and encouraging and go beyond the usual call to treat yo’ self? Obviously, the answer to that was we had to sweeten the deal.
I love a good quote and when I was building the Two Babes site I stumbled across a real pearl by Stella McCartney: “Personal style starts from within because it’s a philosophy and an attitude. If you’re honest and true to yourself, you will have the best sense of personal style.” #PROFOUNDAF amirite???? It sounds so straightforward, but nailing down this elusive sense of personal style is not always easy. Kim and I are currently hard at work developing two budget capsule wardrobes that could carry you from autumn to winter. In the process of researching all things capsule, we realised that one of the very first steps in developing a capsule wardrobe is sitting down and examining what your personal style is.
