Get To Know Me: A Week In My Wardrobe

One of the things I love most about my job is that every day is different. There are days where I work from home (hello tights as pants), there are days when I meet with some of the biggest corporates in the country and then there are days where I sit at my desk in our relaxed, shoes optional, office. Now if you toss in a few lunch dates, after work coffees and two active kids and a schedule that just won’t quit, what you get is a hardworking wardrobe, populated by budget items that provide me with endless options.

Today I am going to be sharing five moments that cover the diversity of my work life and my current wardrobe. Dressing for work can feel like a challenge but since I started dressing to a “personal uniform”, it’s a challenge I have been comfortable rising to.

Here are 6 quick steps to developing your own personal uniform:

  • Pick your 6 favourite most frequently worn items.
  • Jump on Pinterest and go to your outfits board, what have you pinned? How much of it is actually in your wardrobe? How much of it is wishful thinking? Do an audit. Be brutal.
  • Do a try on session. Use what you have right now and try to put together at least 12 outfits from 6-10 of your most cherished pieces.
  • Understand that there is a huge difference between your comfort zone and your personal style, push yourself. Test out those unworn items, you purchased them for a reason right?
  • Make a “This is not my style” list. We all have those things we buy all the time that we never wear and we keep hoping things will change but they never do and before you know it you have a drawer full of velour and bodysuits. You need to examine the bad habits that lead to bad purchases.

THE VINTAGE DRESS + CARDI + HEELS VIBE

I had a fancy pants meeting with a potential brand ambassador at The One and Only in Cape Town. No matter how hard I try, I cannot dress to a corporate aesthetic, the best I can do is smart on my terms. Usually it looks something like this. This dress is a precious vintage find from a store I visited when I lived in Japan. I got it 16 years ago and aside from a small tear in the back (hence the cardi), it’s still in great condition. Vintage clothing is a great way to shop on a budget and still get beautiful items. Would you guys be keen to see a round-up of our favourite vintage stores online and in Cape Town?

THE BLACK ON BLACK WITH BROWN FLATS VIBE

This is one of my go-to outfits for a meeting-free day in the office. I am a huge fan of black and I wear it often. This top is a fairly recent purchase from the Superbalist plus collection. It is from Style Republic. I think it is sold out online but here are two similar options:
Oversized t-shirt
Oversized v-neck

The jeans are high waisted jeggings from Cotton On and they are sold out in most sizes but you can find them here:
High waisted jeggings
I am wearing a size 18.

THE CASUAL GLAM VELVET SKIRT VIBE

Oh you guys, the number of requests I get for the details of this skirt is unreal. It is so so so so pretty. I got it last year on Superbalist and have been waiting for it to be restocked and so far, no dice. If you see something similar available, do let us know!

This skirt might seem like a stand out wardrobe item and it is, but it is also so incredibly versatile. I have done so many different variations of outfits with this skirt that it almost deserves a post of its own. The reason I am telling you this is because often we see items like velvet or sequined skirts and think “oh but when would I ever wear that?” Errrr… You could literally wear it once a week. Don’t shy away from adventurous fabrics. Great fabric is the magical fairy dust that elevates a basic outfit to fabulous heights.

THE RELAXED KNIT WITH JEANS + BOOTS VIBE

This was an outfit for a day in the office filled with internal meetings. I knew I would want to be comfortable so I passed on heels, it was chilly so I tossed on the jumper and hey, my skins are so cosy I could sleep in them. I feel like this is not a remarkable outfit but its structure is one of the pillars of my personal uniform, bottoms, tops, flats. I feel confident and comfortable in this outfit and for that reason alone it is a firm favourite of mine.

THE TIGHTS + TEE + DEMIN SHIRT VIBE

As you may have guessed from the pick, this was a work from home day. I am so lucky to be able to work remotely and on days when I do, I usually look like this. Tights, tee and something tossed over if it’s chilly. It’s perfect for sitting at my desk *cough-dining room table-cough*

I would love to see what you all wear to work? Why not do your own version of this post and share it on your Instagram stories? You can tag us so we can get some fresh ideas!
