Statement tees have been trending for a while now and over at Two Babes we are LIVING for them! It’s a movement we’re not seeing the end of, thank goodness! It’s a way to say something about yourself or make a statement about your beliefs without saying a word. And because they’re so popular, everyone owns at least one. Or ten. Because what’s not to love?
For one, graphic t-shirts are incredibly versatile – they can be BFFs with basically anything in your wardrobe and can go from day to evening in a flash. It’s one of those comfy staples that works for every shape and are dirt cheap – starting from about R59.99
Gone are the days when the everyday t-shirt was just a cotton essential to laze about in over the weekend; nowadays you can get as much mileage out of it as a trusty Toyota Tazz. From catwalks to red carpets, black tie to boardroom, street style to street fair it’s a timeless piece works for winter or summer, casual or chic, and transitions like a dream!
So today we’ll show you our favourite pairings.
Boyfriend Jeans and Pumps
This the quintessential ‘running errands’ look, and also transitions easily from weekends to work days. Slap on a pair or hot-right-now pumps or mules, an animal print scarf and a structured bag to be office ready or switch out the pumps for platform sneakers for a casual day of admin. At night, let your feet do the talking with vibrant stilettos in a slaying neon shade and add a statement clutch for good measure. And when travelling, you simply can’t go wrong with a tailored and detailed biker jacket and Chuck Taylors.
Paper Bag Pants and Pointy Shoes
I call this the ‘interview look’. It’s stylish enough to show that you mean business without trying too hard. And it doesn’t stop at interview style. With tiny changes you can probably make while adding mascara at a robot, this li’l ensemble can fit any occasion – slip into flats and tinted shades for Sunday brunch, pop on a leather jacket when you’re bar hopping or fashion shopping, and add a statement necklace when showing up for a presentation.
Skirts and Platform Sneakers
I don’t need to tell you all the relationship Nikki and I have with skirts – just a constant adoration. Pairing your statement tee with a skirt in a fun print is worthy of an Instagram lust-worthy street look. I’ve matched my statement tee with a safe (read boring) skirt but think bold prints, vibrant colours and never-seen-before fabrics – think plaid, tweed, , animal print, camo in jade shades, pleated and assymmetrical – the possibilities are endless! I recently read a post where a tee was married with a tulle ballerina-esque tutu and an animal print waist belt (think Carrie Bradshaw) or a floor length volume skirt – tee always tucked in I can’t think of anything more excitingly elegant.
Denim Shirt and Fiesty Skirt
A straight up denim shirt and skirt can get a little dull after a while so why not layer your statement tee with denim, tie it, and pair with a cheeky, flaring skirt and leggings. You can even ditch the leggings for adorable knee high socks and broques. Perfect for a chic li’l night out, dinner date or afternoon soiree.
Jeans, Coat and High Heels
With the weather airing on the side of chilly, a thick stylish coat is an absolute must! I’m working my way to a basic wardrobe with neutral colours hence the camel coat but be a daring and try a coat in chartreuse, fire engine red or sea green. Match the energy with complementary heels or pumps and a structured clutch.
