I must say, when it comes to accessories, it’s the one staple I have seriously neglected over the years. I used to shop for them almost sacredly but my skin reacts so badly to nickel that I’ve resorted to only wearing my wedding rings. But ghuuus, the accessories that are trending in 2019 are SO gorgeous that I had to surrender. Summer is hot on our heels and we can’t discount just how much accessories add a fun and easy update to any summer outfit.
BEADED NECKLACES & EARRINGS
I’ve always wondered why we look at Europe for trends when Africa has so much to offer in terms of diversity, culture and colour, and with it, vibrant designs. For eons, colourful beads have been used to express love and tell stories on our continent, and now you can tell your own story of individuality. Here are my top picks from H&M, Woolworths and Superbalist – vibrant beads will add an interest to any plain outfit. If you’re not yet bold enough to reach for a pop of colour, try gold-coloured beads that goes with everything in your closet.
Most of the pieces above are from H&M. They don’t have an online shop yet, so check out the style steals from Superbalist and Woolies – starting from R79.95 and all under R200! What I love about Woolies jewellery is that they’ve hypoallergenic and completely nickel free! Good news for those like me who have allergies.
A REASON FOR RESIN
We’ve been tickled by rose gold, silver, and vintage piecess, and now we’re ready to welcome the return of the resin earring. It’s ’80’s. It’s plastic (recyclable we hope). It’s fantastic. And a throwback we’re living for!
Almost all of these styles are from Superbalist but H&M, Mr Pricce and Woolworths also have a few stylish options to grab today.
OUT TO SEA CHAINS AND EARRINGS
I have never been a fan of shell necklaces – they’re a little surfer slash over tourism contributor but I’ve seen them cropping up as gold adornments on necklaces, for that resort-ready look – in earrings, statement rings and pendants. Before you begin to cringe at this beachy trend, have a look at the simple yet envy-worthy styles above. H&M has a huge selection as well as Mr Price and Woolworths.
SKINNY, CATS EYE SUNGLASSES
This season you’ll find strong geometric frames and vibrant coloured sunglasses inspired from the late ‘90s, with classic styles still boasting interesting detail to keep things modern.
I’ve surfed a few trend reports to bring you a list of the hottest sunglasses for you to try right now. Cats eye is the must-have style of the moment and you can up the ante with an attached chain in 2019’s beaded beauties.
LIGHTWEIGHT PRINTED SCARVES
A throw-on-and go staple, scarf isn’t just for winter anymore. Cooler than they look, micro scarves can be tied into bandeau knots, wrapped around a braid or worn as a headscarf – there’s no wrong way to wear it! Use it to transform a basic ensemble to breathtaking!
There are so many on-trend ways to rock your bag, sunnies, bags and even hair accessories this summer. The best thing about accessories is that it’s less expensive than creating an entire trendy new wardrobe — especially if you’re on a budget. So consider this your excuse to treat yourself on some fun summer 2019 accessories. More trend. Less spend.
