On Saturday, we were invited to enjoy the “Spring Delight Special” at Jiva Spa set in a tranquil oasis in the Taj Hotel in Cape Town. The Taj is about as iconic to Cape Town as the City Hall. If you work in the Cape Town CBD, you have no doubt driven past it a few times. Travel through the opulent hotel lobby and up just one floor to the Jiva Spa and you will find yourself transported to a world of calm. Jiva is built around 6000-year-old Eastern wellness philosophies devised to align body, soul and mind,
From the warm ‘Namaste’ welcome at the door to the cosy candle-lit ambiance to the friendly, professional therapists, Jiva is an absolute paradise.
PERFECT FOR COUPLES
It’s not often that you find a spa (winelands spas excluded) where you are able to bask in complete luxury without travelling too far. Jiva, being in the city centre, is the perfect day date for couples. The couples massage room has what you’d expect, double massage tables, ambient lighting and candles. It ALSO has its own sauna, a deluxe shower and massive bathtub, perfect for an indulgent soak.
THE SPRING DELIGHT
We were treated to the Spring Delight package that lasts for 2 and a half hours (but felt much longer!) and starts in the Wet and Heat room. We slipped into our cozzies and enjoyed 10 minutes in the gloriously warm jacuzzi to loosen our muscles and open up the pores to sip up all the essential oil goodness. We then slipped into our organic cotton robes and hemp slippers since the spa’s ethos is “everything that touches the body must be completely natural”. Then the magic began.
OK KIM, GIVE US THE DETAILS!
I was first treated to a foot soak and light massage in rose water and essentials oils while my therapist explained my treatment. I was then pampered with a full body exfoliation and when I say full body – I mean EVERYTHING. Feet, navel, neck, underarm area, bum cheeks, everything (I feel cheated that other spas have only done the back of my body). From the amazing scent that filled my nose I assume it was freshly blended strawberries, lavender oil and sugar. I then hopped into the adjoining hot shower with an array of shampoos, conditioners and body wash. I cannot begin to tell you how soft my skin felt after. Like velvet, covered in chocolate. I felt like a completely new person, and smelt delicious even 24 hours later.
On to the full body massage with ginger, lemon and I think, frankincense. My masseuse had angel hands, I swear. I don’t even think what I had before can be a called a massage. She knew exactly which pressure points to massage; I felt every anxiety, tension and bad memory leave my body; I felt a cleansing and I am pretty sure I dozed off for a few minutes. Again, completely full body – front and back – including the tummy area. I didn’t realise how much tension I was holding onto in my gut; I felt all my aches and pains just disappear. It also included a soothing head massage and even a face massage to get rid of the tension you hold in your jaw! You don’t know how much you need it until you have it. She then rubbed a soothing mask onto my hands and tucked them under the cosy blanket. Thereafter, my hands were buttery soft and ready for my final treatment – a thorough manicure. I have neglected my hands for so long (and bite my nails as well!) and we’ve done a few DIY projects at home where turpentine, carrying bricks and industrial strength hand-wash have left my hands and nails drier than prunes left out in the sun for months. The therapist took her time to soften my cuticles, file down my ridged nails and meticulously applied a nail strengthener and polish. By this time, I was so zen that I literally couldn’t move a muscle but she predicted my every move and would comfortably place my hands and feet wherever they needed to go.
A warm towel on the feet and a warmer greeting ends your treatment before retreating to the relaxation room where you’re pampered with lemon water as well as green tea mix with basil, ginger and something unfamiliar yet delicious, to detox. You also get served a plate of fresh fruit.
THE VERDICT? LET’S HEAR IT, NIKKI!
Jiva provides a near perfect spa experience. And the only thing I could fault them on is the absence of the beautiful scenery of the winelands. But the hotel is set in the most incredible part of Cape Town which is just perfect for a post treatment stroll or people watching in one of the many cafes in St. Georges Mall. Jiva is set in a quiet space within the hotel – you cannot hear the hustle and bustle of town nor a peep from guests, the music was soothing and not over stimulating, lighting perfect, cleanliness supreme and the team of therapists are committed to making it a relaxing experience for body and mind. Seriously, 5 stars. I know that both Kim and I will be back and probably VERY soon. We had the most incredible time.
Thank you, Jiva we are so thrilled to have discovered your gem of a spa. We all deserve a little pampering now and then. There are certain investments in body and mind worth doing and this is without a doubt one of them.
Kim and I were gifted the Spring Delight package which includes a 30 minutes full body exfoliation, an hour long full body massage and an hour long manicure. The Spring Delight special runs until the 30th of November so don’t wait too long to book!
The Spring Delight package is R1250 (marked down from R1800). I know, I know, we’re Two Babes on a Budget but trust us, if you can afford the splurge, it is worth Every. Single. Penny. And then some. I have enjoyed half day spas for a lot more and what you get at Jiva Spa wins (buttery soft) hands down.
