Did you wake up this morning to a little ping on your phone? Did you read the SMS and think: “THANK ALL THE GODS I AM RICH AGAIN!”?
Let me start by saying, Happy Pay Day! I want you to take a minute to enjoy this feeling because I am about to challenge you to not spend any of your hard-earned cash. Now you might be thinking, “the fuck is wrong with you, Nikki?” But allow me a chance to convince you….
THE NO BUY CHALLENGE REBOOT
At the start of 2020, almost a whole month ago, I saw a few of my favourite international bloggers declare 2020 a No Spend Year. I felt inspired! But I am not insane, the chance of me sticking to a year entire of not spending is just really unrealistic. I am a firm believer in setting attainable goals. So I went over to my cupboard and I truly considered what was in my fashion (hahaha) arsenal. I knew that I had more than enough to last me all through summer and autumn. I then went onto Instagram and stalked a few of you who watch our stories and looked at your outfits and deduced that perhaps, you had enough to last too. Which got me thinking, how do we create a No Buy Challenge that isn’t just about not spending, and isn’t just for a month, and isn’t as rigid and restrictive as the previous one?
LET’S GO BEYOND A SPENDING BAN
Encouraging you to spend less on clothing is not just great for your finances, it’s great for the planet and will give you a chance to get up close and personal with your existing wardrobe. Not spending money is hard for me. Before we started this blog I hardly ever spent any money on myself, on my clothing, on skincare or makeup. My kids always came first. And then Two Babes was born and in some ways, I went into a minor spending frenzy. It was important for me to show you different things, new items, etc. And I felt so good about myself because I was giving myself the kind of care I had so deeply neglected in past years. But it’s a slippery slope. Anyway, I digress. For this round of the No Buy Challenge, we are going to ask that instead of simply not spending, you also save. And you don’t need to save a specific amount of money each month. If you see a tee or a pair of jeans you’d like to purchase, take that money and put it somewhere safe. Whether you draw out the cash and stuff it in an envelope or maybe just transfer it to a savings account. Be aware of what you would have spent, and save it instead.
OK, SO HOW LONG ARE WE TALKING?
Guys, I am just going to say it, we need you to commit to the No Buy Challenge from the 1st of February until the 1st of May. Yep! Just 3 months. You can do it. And if you want to do it for longer then great! But try not to do it for less than the 3 months.
RIGHT, HERE ARE THE RULES!
The last No Buy Challenge we did was quite rigid, but because this is for 3 months, we realised that we cannot ask you to forgo so much. We need to live after all. The point of this challenge is not to make you miserable. We want to see that there is much happiness to be found away from online shopping and clothing stores and makeup counters. We want you to get out there and enjoy life, to create memories instead of just acquiring possessions. I can see your eyes rolling into the back of your head, so let’s just dive into the rules:
No buying takeaways – if you need to eat out, then limit yourself to one outing a month where you get dressed up and leave the house and be a person enjoying the world. No purchased lunches or fast food suppers.
Booze – no home drinking. Buy the booze if you’re entertaining but other than that, stay away. Wine is a money sucker and you just don’t need it. Ok? You don’t.
CLOTHING & SHOES:
No clothing purchases unless necessary – for example, all of your panties suddenly break and you have zero wearable underwear or your shoes all have holes in them. Emergency or necessary purchases are allowed, but if you feel like buying something just because you want it, then just check yourself before you wreck yourself, please.
SKINCARE AND COSMETICS:
ZERO. NEW. MAKEUP
ZERO. NEW. SKINCARE. PRODUCTS
Ok to be fair, if you are out of face wash and you need to buy some then go for it, but other than that, issa no from us!
Just no. Read through what you already have. I know there are books on your bookshelf waiting to be read. Use this time to get through that stack. No new books allowed.
Just because I don’t want there to be any grey areas, you also cannot spend money on electronics, stationery, home décor and beauty treatments like spa days and mani/pedis.
WE’RE GOING TO BE THERE FOR YOU!
If you’re in Cape Town, please keep checking our Facebook Page for information about the clothing swap Kim and I will be hosting in March. This will give you a chance to get rid of the things you no longer want and top up on some new goodies for free.
We’ll also be walking the talk and not purchasing any items and because of that, the next few months on the blog are going to be all about reusing what you already have and frugal fashion tips. Towards the end of last year, we asked you what you would like to see more of and so many of you told us that you would like to know how to use what you already have. We hear you and we need to unpack this more. We’re also going to be sharing a few DIY tips and sharing great, budget-friendly work lunches and we will have 5 rad competitions launching in this time, so even though you can’t buy, you can win!
